Ragon Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Core


Core Summary

The Ragon Institute’s BSL-3 Core provides laboratory space, training, and consultation for academic and industry researchers working with Risk Group 3 (RG3) pathogens. Research in the facility includes agents such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Coccidioides spp., SARS-CoV-2, Chikungunya virus, West Nile virus, Powassan virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Western equine encephalitis virus, Dabie bandavirus, Heartland virus, and Bhanja virus, among others. Additionally, the facility includes dedicated ABSL-3 space for research with RG3 pathogens.
 
Researchers are required to complete 30 hours of BSL-3 specific training before becoming certified users of the BSL-3 Core. Training includes facility containment systems, BSL-3-specific PPE, and biosafety regulations governing work with high-risk pathogens.
